Wine Coolers: The Uncool Coolers
Alcohol is alcohol. Wine coolers taste sweet and syrupy because they are made of fruit juice and sugar. But unlike fruit juice or soft drinks, they also contain enough wine to give them the same amount of alcohol as a can of beer. Wine coolers also have more than double the calories of most light beers. Wine coolers are a product of the 1980s. They were invented by two California businessmen who thought there might be a big market for “an alcoholic soft drink.” In 1985 they sold their business to a large liquor manufacturer for $143 million. Today wine coolers are bigger business than ever with sales consistently topping $1 billion. Now the five major cooler manufacturers will do almost anything to get more people to drink their products. They spend between $25-30 million per year on advertising. They aim their ads at the generation that have been brought up on the sweet, fizzy taste of pop – pepsi, coca cola, kool-aid etc. Though no one knows how many teens and adults are drinking wine coolers, the product has made an impact. Kids see the ads on TV and they think they will be liked if they drink them. “Wine coolers are kind-a like soda pop so kids drink it because they can stand the taste much better than beer,” says a 17 year old girl. But the taste and image can’t disguise the fact that wine coolers contain lots of alcohol.

The Problem with Alcohol
Like their adult role models, teens drink for difference reasons:

To fit in

To feel grown-up

To be able to let loose

To make themselves feel better

To find out what drinking is all about

To be defiant

About 30% of boys and 22% of girls classify themselves as “drinkers” by the age of 13. According to the Office of Substance Abuse Prevention, millions of teens have an alcohol problem. One spokesperson says “they think it’s cool to drink.”

Unfortunately most people don’t realize how dangerous alcohol can be. The central nervous system, which includes the brain, is the first part of the body to feel the effects of alcohol. When it first reaches the brain, it slows brain cell activity, making the drinker feel more relaxed and uninhibited. But as more alcohol reaches the brain, the drinker becomes clumsy, his or her speech slurs, and the drinker may experience numbness, blurred vision, dizziness, poor motor control, and loss of balance and coordination. Alcohol, when consumed in large quantities, can even act as an anesthetic, causing unconsciousness and even death. Unlike food, fruit juice or soda pop, alcohol is not digested. It is absorbed directly into the blood-stream and carried immediately throughout the body. So when people drink beer, wine or liquor they feel the effects all over their bodies. Too much drinking may lead to malnutrition, lower resistance to infection and increased risk of cancers of the mouth, throat and liver.

Because a young person’s body is still growing and developing, scientists believe that the effects of alcohol can be more serious for a child or teenager than for an adult. Young drinkers also may become dependent on alcohol much more quickly than adults – even if they drink only wine coolers.

Why Coolers Aren’t

Alcohol has been called a “gateway” drug because it can lead people to use other, harder drugs. Wine coolers should be considered a gateway drink because their sweet taste and snappy packaging make them acceptable to people who aren’t used to drinking. Advertising is deceitful and tells people –

“cool people drink wine coolers so join the crowd”
“you’ll be popular if you buy this”
“if you drink wine coolers like this or that famous movie star or celebrity, it must be good”
“this wine cooler will give you charm, wit, beauty and elegance like this picture”

The key is – not to buy any of these. The advertisers don’t have your well-being in mind; they don’t care whether they make you popular, attractive or cool. They just want your money.

The alcohol in wine coolers is a drug that can hurt your mind, body and relationships. Drinking them does not guarantee you anything other than bad breath. And you can be cool or famous without drinking.

One famous family music group says: “We rehearse and perform a lot. It’s hard work, so we have to be physically fit. Our minds have to be free from alcohol, tobacco and other drugs for us to do our best. Besides we have to work together as a group. Alcohol won’t help us do that.”

When it comes to wine coolers: BE SMART, DON’T START – JUST SAY NO.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) causes growth deficiency and abnormally low weight, facial abnormalities, short height, and small head circumference. When a pregnant woman drinks alcohol it reaches the baby in 1 minute and may remain for hours. The number one birth defect, probably throughout the whole world, is entirely preventable if pregnant women do not drink! As adults – height and head circumference remain below normal size. It also interferes with the central nervous system and reduces typically the IQ of a person from an early age all the way up to age 24. Significant changes occur in the brain during adolescence and alcohol use can cause lifelong impairment and damage short-term growth processes, over 90% have mental health problems. When older many problems arise regarding functioning in social settings, boys in trouble with the law, and girls with unwanted pregnancies. Difficulties with general intellectual functioning and academic skills include: attention and memory deficits, hyperactivity, difficulty with abstract concepts, poor judgment, immature behavior, delayed reaction time, poor motor skills.

If someone tries to force sexual activity on you, take the following actions recommended by the US Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. Be aware that the presence of alcohol or other drugs can make the situation more difficult to deal with. Stay calm and think. Assess your situation quickly. Stay no strongly. Do not smile. Do not act friendly or polite. Say something like, “Stop it. This is rape.” It might shock the rapist into stopping.
Look for an escape route. There is no shame in escaping a dangerous situation. If you can figure out a way to distract the attacker, you can sometimes run away. Act quickly if possible. The longer you remain in the situation, the few options you have. Decide if it is safe to resist. People who hit back and scream have a much higher chance of cutting short the assault than those who don’t. If the attacker is armed, however, don’t try anything that could bring harm to you. Some basic steps you might take: Attempt to talk your way out of it. Appeal to a sense of humanity and decency. Try to get the attacker to see you as an individual person who is being hurt.
Use passive resistance. Pretend to faint or thow up. If the attacker is not armed, consider adding some aggressive steps to your plan of action: Use intimidation. Say that someone is on the way. Shout “fire.” If you shout “help,” people may ignore you. They are more likely to respond to “fire.” Fight back. Try a poke in the eye, a kick, a punch in the Adam’s apple, or a blow with a lamp or other item. Fight so that you can escape, but resist only as long as it is safe to do so.

Some of the danger signs of Rape
Reduce the risk of being raped by learning to recognize the following danger signals and hazardous situations: One-on-one situations in which alcohol is consumed. Acquaintance rape is widely associated with drinking. Instances in which you are the only woman, especially if people are drinking. There’s safety in numbers. Individuals who, after consuming alcohol, do not respect personal boundaries. Individuals who attempt to use guilt or accuse you of being uptight if you resist their sexual advances. Heavy drinkers. An intoxicated person may be more likely to become sexually aggressive, angry, or violent if rejected.

Alcohol, the partner in Rape and other Violence
More often than not, alcohol plays a role in acts of aggression and violence. Under its influence, you could become a victim – or a criminal. The evening wasn’t supposed to end like this. Lisa bit her lip, staring at her tear-stained face in the mirror jumbled scenes of last night’s date with Rob flashed painfully through her head. It had seemed so innocent. A movie. A few beers. A little flirting and kissing. Suddenly Rob wouldn’t stop. He was all over her – groping, pinning her down, hitting her when she tried to resist. Shivering involuntarily, Lisa again felt the fear and helplessness of her rape. If only she could change the events of the past few hours. If only. Like Lisa, every year thousands of young adults discover firsthand the dark, raging side of alcohol. Although alcohol ads promise a carefree, exciting party life, in reality drinking can bring pain, sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancy, financial hardship, or a life behind bars. When alcohol enters the picture, some people become victims. Others become criminals. Consider the hidden partnerships alcohol offers:

Partner in rape – between 1/3rd and ¾ of sexual assaults involved alcohol use. Alcohol-related rape tend to be more forceful and violent.
Partner in home violence – a study reveals rates of violence to be 15x higher in homes where the husband is drunk.
Partner in murder – In 60% of homicide cases, the murderers were drinking when they killed.
Out of Control?
Researchers believe that alcohol may contribute to violence in several ways: Alcohol robs good judgment and clear thinking. Affects the brain’s neurotransmitters. Mess with nerve cells, and you basically end up with an out-of-order brain. Good judgment sours. After drinking a guy might confuse a girl’s hello as a flirtatious come-on. Or a girl might not notice a guy’s sexual intentions until it’s too late. One misunderstanding can lead to rape or other violence. Alcohol can amplify expectations that lead to violence. Drinking alcohol has psychological effects. Guys often believe that alcohol will make them feel less inhibited and more powerful, sexual, and aggressive. And they may view girls who drink as prime targets for sexual abuse. One study found that people who’ve had alcohol or who think they’ve had alcohol tend to act more aggressively than others. Another study found that men who believe they’ve been drinking are more turned on by the idea of rape. Alcohol may make you feel less responsible for your behavior. Following drinking binges, college students may brag about fist fights, vandalism, forced sex, and other socially unacceptable behaviors. But a person who drinks is still responsible for pain and damage.
Let’s be Honest
Remember Lisa and Rob? In her right mind, Lisa would have exercised more caution on her date. She would have insisted on staying with a group of people. She would have been less flirtatious and quicker to pick up on Rob’s sexual advances. One simple choice to drink and she became a victim. She was not responsible for her rape, since she said no. But she might have avoided alcohol and a date who drank. In his right mind, Rob would not have sexually assaulted Lisa. He would have exercised good judgment. One simple choice to drink, and he ended up a rapist. Alcohol is mind-altering, behavior-changing drug. But that’s no excuse for violent behavior.
Reduce your risk of becoming a victim or a criminal. Keep your wits about you, and join millions of teenagers and adults who have chosen not to use alcohol.

Marijuana is the most widely used illegal drug in the United States. It is a dry, shredded green/brown mix of flowers, stems, and leaves of the plant Cannabis sativa. A stronger form of marijuana called hashish (hash) looks like brown or black cakes or balls. The many street names for marijuana include pot, herb, weed, grass, Jane, reefer, dope, and ganja. Marijuana is typically smoked in cigarettes (joints or spliffs), hollowed-out cigars (blunts), pipes (bowls), or water pipes (bongs). Some people mix it into food or brew it as a tea.

Short-Term Effects

The main active chemical in marijuana is THC (delta9tetrahydrocannabinol). When smoked, THC passes from the lungs into the bloodstream, which transports it to the brain and other organs. When it reaches the brain, THC connects with a certain type of receptor on nerve cells in areas that affect coordination, thought, memory, concentration, sensory and time perception, and pleasure. This causes the marijuana “high.”

Marijuana users can experience these short-term effects:

Difficulty in thinking and problem solving

Problems with short term memory and learning

Loss of coordination

Distorted perception

These effects can make activities like driving dangerous while under the influence of the drug.

Caffeine is a drug that is naturally produced in the leaves and seeds of many plants. It’s also produced artificially and added to certain foods. Caffeine is defined as a drug because it stimulates the central nervous system, causing increased alertness. Caffeine gives most people a temporary energy boost and elevates mood. Caffeine is in tea, coffee, chocolate, many soft drinks, and pain relievers and other over-the-counter medications. In its natural form, caffeine tastes very bitter. But most caffeinated drinks have gone through enough processing to camouflage the bitter taste. Teens usually get most of their caffeine from soft drinks and energy drinks. (In addition to caffeine, these also can have added sugar and artificial flavors.) Caffeine is not stored in the body, but you may feel its effects for up to 6 hours.

Alcohol intoxication destroys the liver and affects the brain, causing slurred speech, clumsiness, and delayed reflexes. Severe alcohol poisoning can be fatal. A blood alcohol content of .45% in test animals results in a median lethal dose. This means that .45% is the concentration of blood alcohol that is fatal in 50% of the test subjects. That is about six times the level of ordinary intoxication (0.08%), but vomiting or unconsciousness may occur much sooner in people who have a low tolerance for alcohol. The high tolerance of chronic heavy drinkers may allow some of them to remain conscious at levels above .40%, although serious health dangers are incurred at this level. Alcohol also limits the production of vasopressin (ADH) from the hypothalmus and the secretion of this hormone from the posterior pituitary gland. This is what causes severe dehydration when large amounts of alcohol are drunk. It also causes a high concentration of water in the urine and vomit and the intense thirst that goes along with a hangover. All in all drinking alcohol is a highly damaging practice and not recommended.

The health effects of tobacco are the circumstances, mechanisms, and factors of tobacco consumption on human health. Epidemiological research has been focused primarily on cigarette tobacco smoking, which has been studied more extensively than any other form of consumption.

Tobacco is the single greatest cause of preventable death in the US and worldwide. Tobacco use leads most commonly to diseases affecting the heart and lungs, with smoking being a major risk factor for heart attacks, strokes, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, high blood pressure, and various forms of cancer.

The effects depend on the number of years that a person smokes and on how much the person smokes. Starting smoking earlier in life and smoking cigarettes higher in tar increases the risk of these diseases. Cigarettes sold in 3rd world countries tend to have higher tar content, and are less likely to be filtered, potentially increasing vulnerability to tobacco-related disease in these regions.

The WHO estimates that tobacco caused 5.4 million deaths in 2004 and 100 million deaths over the course of the 20th century.Similarly, the United States CDC describes tobacco use as “the single most important preventable risk to human health in developed countries and an important cause of premature death worldwide.”

Smoke contains several carcinogenic pyrolytic products that bind to DNA and cause many genetic mutations. There are over 19 known chemical carcinogens in cigarette smoke. Tobacco also contains nicotine. When tobacco is smoked, nicotine causes physical and psychological dependency. Tobacco use is a significant factor in miscarriages among pregnant smokers, it contributes to a number of other threats to the health of the fetus such as premature births and low birth weight and increases by 1.4 to 3 times the chance for SIDS.
